Victorian Hand Surgery Associates Fellowship

Two clinical fellowships in Hand Surgery are available for 12 month periods for surgeons who have successfully completed their surgical training and are interested in further training in Hand Surgery. One of these positions is available for applicants appointed to the PFET program in Hand Surgery administered by the Australian Hand Surgery Society. The successful candidates will work with the surgeons of the Victorian Hand Surgery Associates in private practice and with the Plastic and Hand Surgery Unit at St. Vincent’s Public Hospital Melbourne.

The clinical fellowship involves experience in pre-operative, operative and post-operative management of a wide variety of hand conditions. This will include both elective and emergency conditions including microsurgical resconstruction and replantation. The fellows will also be encouraged to become involved in post-operative rehabilitation with involvement with the private and public hand therapy services.

The fellows will be involved in the day to day running of the hand service including undergraduate and post-graduate teaching, journal club, audit and other clinical meetings and ongoing clinical research. The fellows will also attend regular meetings of the Victorian Hand Surgery Society and will be expected to present papers at the annual scientific meeting of this society.

A stipend is available for successful candidates.

A 12-month laboratory research fellowship is also available. This involves research performed through the Hand and Wrist Biomechanics Laboratory at the O’Brien Institute/St Vincents Institute of Medical Research. This position is open to surgical trainees and post-fellowship applicants. Funding for this position will depend on successful grant applications.

Dandenong Hospital Hand Surgery Fellowship

Applications are invited for a Hand Surgery Fellowship position at Dandenong Hospital, Southern Health, Melbourne.

This is a 12-month AOA accredited position suitable for a candidate preparing for a career in hand and wrist surgery. The successful candidate will be involved in emergency and elective cases, on call from the emergency department and outpatient care.

The successful candidate will also be involved in continuing education to undergraduate students, residents and registrars in the surgical training program, journal club and audit. The fellow will be expected to complete clinical or laboratory research suitable for presentation and publication. Laboratory research will be carried out at the Hand and Wrist Biomechanics Laboratory, O’Brien Institute/St. Vincent’s Institute of Medical Research.

The fellowship commences in August and applications close 28 February the year before the commencement date.

Royal Childrens Hospital Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery Department Paediatric Hand and Microsurgery Fellowship

A Fellowship in paediatric hand surgery and microsurgery is available for a 12 month period beginning August 1st, for surgeons who are seeking to specialize in paediatric hand and microsurgery.

Applicants will require a Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery or equivalent qualification. Previous experience in Paediatric Hand and Microsurgery is desirable. The successful applicant will be exposed to a broad range of Paediatric Hand, Peripheral Nerve and Reconstructive Microsurgical cases and in addition to the clinical experience, will also be expected to develop and complete a research project and be involved in clinical audit and also training and supervision of junior staff.

Applications should be received before 30th June of the year prior.
